HELLINGER 42: A vision becomes reality

After a year of construction, the Dresdner Whisky Manufaktur opens its doors to visitors. Right in the heart of Dresden, more precisely in the well-known Alberthafen on Magdeburger Straße, there has been a flurry of activity since September 2020: That was when the starting signal was given for the conversion of the former Elbe salmon smokehouse into Dresden's Whisky Manufactory.
The building had been empty since 2017, and now it houses a distillery with state-of-the-art technology on 900 square metres. "We are the most modern distillery currently available here," says co-initiator Thomas Michalski. "Because of the energy efficiency and higher yield, we decided to use a special system of dynamic mash filtration - called 'Nessie'," says Michalski. "This has never been built like this in any other distillery plant."

Master distiller Jörg Hans is responsible for the distilling process. He began his training as a brewer and maltster at the age of only 16, then studied in Berlin and graduated as a master brewer. He then moved to Switzerland and Scotland for various further training courses, and later worked in breweries, malt houses and distilleries between Sweden and Switzerland. His work earned him an entry in Jim Murray's whisky bible twice. "What could be better than producing the 'water of life' and making many people happy with it," says the master distiller.

Of course, there is also the possibility for a whisky tasting. Starting on 7 October, there will be a public tasting every Thursday, for which anyone can register in advance (price per person: 42 euros). For larger groups, the entire tasting room is optionally available for rent. All information is available at www.hellinger42.de.
